Wes sat in Graystoneâs study and tapped his finger on the arm of his chair. Theyâd been in there for a quarter of an hour waiting for dinner to be announced.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Graystone asked.
âNothing,â he said nonchalantly. Fox probably believed Wes was worried about him and his wife. He would be wrong. Wes wanted to leave the study and go search for Lady Carolina. He didnât even know what heâd do if he found her. She would probably be irritated to see him, and he wouldnât blame her. They didnât have a conventional relationship. No one in her family was aware heâd been teaching her, and they would be quite dismayed if they did.
âWe should go to the sitting room,â Graystone announced. âDinner will commence faster if we do. Then we can return here and leave the ladies alone to gossip.â
âIâm all right with that,â Fox agreed. He stood and waited for Graystone, then followed him out. Wes sighed and did the same. He kept a slower pace, reluctant to go into the sitting room. Fox and Graystone were deep in conversation and hadnât noticed he wasnât right there with them. Wes ducked into the library for a few moments alone.
He frowned. The room wasnât as empty as heâd hoped to find it. The twins were standing near the window seat, deep in conversation. They turned, identical expressions of irritation in his direction. He glanced at one, then the other. As he studied them, he realized they were not as indistinguishable as heâd believed. He would know Lady Carolina anywhere. Her golden blonde hair was pulled back in a simple chignon. Her twinâs locks were lessâ¦tame, with few loose curls that had escaped falling over her forehead. Lady Christiana had a wildness about her that couldnât be contained. Lady Carolina was more serene, but not in a fragile way. She had a quiet strength and determination heâd come to admire.
Not that she didnât have a little wildness in her as well. She had come to audition in menâs clothing, after all. The difference was she made calculated decisions, and in his opinion, Lady Christiana made more impulsive ones. He didnât envy Fox in that regard. âMy apologies,â he said. âI was unaware anyone was in here.â
âDonât go,â Lady Christiana said. âWe were about to depart. You can stay here if you wish to.â
âSheâs right,â Lady Carolina replied, then smiled. âThough dinner should be announced soon. Perhaps you can visit the library after.â
âThatâs true,â he said. He met her gaze and tilted his lips upward. Wes wished sheâd been alone. He had a need to pull her into his arms and kiss her. Perhaps it was serendipitous that sheâd been with her twin. That urge would have been a mistake. âI could escort you both to the sitting room.â
âThat would be lovely,â Lady Christiana told him. She narrowed her gaze and studied him. Why was she doing that? Wes ignored her. He was certain if he reacted, it would only encourage her.
